Hagen’s cicada
Callogaeana hageni

Identity and classification
Morphology and identification
Distant described an olive-brown body, pale green forewings with a broad dark apical border and a rounded dark spot at the base of the third apical cell. Pale blue-green hindwings have a narrower dark outer border. [1]
A described variant has a second, smaller dark spot at the base of the fifth forewing apical cell. [1]
Range and habitat
The original account records material from Tandjong Morawa, Serdang, Sumatra, collected by Dr B. Hagen and represented in the Leiden museum and Distant’s collection. [1]
Nomenclature and history
Specimen views
The forewing’s broad dark apical border contrasts with the narrower hindwing edge. Distant located the main rounded spot at the base of the third forewing apical cell and the additional variant spot at the fifth. [1]
Artistic interpretation
Pale green and cooler blue-green wing fields contrast with dark borders and small, localized spots.
Display and care
Display the closed frame in indirect light, away from heat and persistent damp. Handle its enclosure rather than the specimen, and avoid contact with fragile wings.
Identification and evidence notes
Where was the original material from? Distant recorded Tandjong Morawa in Serdang, Sumatra. [1]
Sources and evidence
Distant’s monograph documents adult characters, a spot-pattern variant and the historical locality. The 2025 systematic study supplies the current genus placement. [1][2]
