Taxonomy and related species

Delias sanaca belongs to Pieridae and the belladonna group. Its named mainland populations include perspicua and the Vietnamese bidoupa. [1][2][3]

Adult morphology

Female bidoupa have black upper wings with elongated whitish forewing spots and white or yellow hindwing markings. These marks are smaller than in the compared perspicua. Spots below are sharper, including the yellow row near the hindwing margin. [3]

Distribution and habitat

The species occurs in the Himalaya and mainland Southeast Asia. [2]

Bidoupa females were found beside an evergreen-forest stream near Mount Bi Doup, Lam Dong, Vietnam, at 1,600 metres. [3]

Research findings

The bidoupa female type specimens have forewing lengths of 44 and 48 mm. Their black antennae have greyish clubs. [3]

Taxonomic history

Monastyrskii and Vu Van Lien described bidoupa in 2021, naming it after Mount Bi Doup. The holotype and paratype were collected on 6 April 2002. [3]

Dorsal and ventral characters

Female bidoupa have whitish upper hindwing spots; the ventral cell streak is white with a yellow tip. [3]

Illustration notes

The illustrations retain the pale markings and wing outline of the identified reference adult. Geographic form and locality define comparisons with similar berinda specimens.

Specimen care

Keep the enclosure away from direct sunlight, dampness and large changes in temperature or humidity. Handle the frame, clean only its exterior, and inspect for loose fragments, moisture and pests. Retain the specimen’s original labels and follow the enclosure maker’s care instructions. [4]
