Identity and classification

Prepona claudina is a nymphalid in the subfamily Charaxinae. Agrias claudina is its former generic combination; Agrias is now treated as a synonym of Prepona. [1]

Morphology and identification

At Cacaulândia in Rondônia, the dorsal forewing varies from red to magenta and may have an iridescent blue band beyond the red field. Hindwings range from a large blue patch through mixtures of red and blue to a large red patch. [2]

Distribution and habitat

The species inhabits South America. Documented populations include central Rondônia, Brazil, where it occurs in lowland tropical rainforest, including disturbed and secondary forest. Museum specimens also document occurrence in Amazonas. [2][3]

Behaviour

At the Rondônia study site, adults were recorded in every month and were most frequently encountered from August to February. Males entered putrid-fish bait traps beside forest light gaps. [2]

Distinctive biology

The Rondônia population includes individuals resembling the named geographic forms sardanapalus and croesus, as well as intermediate patterns. The observed color variation had no obvious seasonal pattern. [2]

Nomenclature and history

The modern combination Prepona claudina follows the inclusion of former Agrias species within Prepona. The earlier name remains common in historical literature and specimen records. [1][4]

Artistic interpretation

Display and care
