White Ghost Cicada

Ayuthia spectabile

Hemiptera / Cicadidae

Ayuthia spectabile is a Southeast Asian cicada whose creamy white wing regions contrast with transparent tips and a dark body. The transparent forewing membrane carries nanoscale surface pillars investigated in microscopy and polymer-replication studies.

Identity and classification

Ayuthia spectabile belongs to Cicadidae in Hemiptera. Distant described the genus and species in 1919; the World Auchenorrhyncha Database retains his original spelling, spectabile. [1][3]

Morphology and identification

Distant described the nearly basal half of the forewing as opaque creamy white, with pale chestnut veins and black marks along the outer venation. The hindwing is creamy white except at its extreme tip. [3]

The body is predominantly black above and chestnut below with black shading. Chestnut margins interrupt the black head and pronotum, and three prominent black spots mark the broad posterior pronotal margin. [3]

Distribution and habitat

The Thai checklist records the species from Indochina, the Malay Peninsula and Thailand. The World Auchenorrhyncha Database includes museum specimens labelled from Tapah Hills, Perak, Malaysia. [4][1]

Distinctive biology

Microscopy reveals an array of nanoscale pillars on the transparent forewing membrane. In the 2021 replication study, the measured pillars were approximately 209 nm wide and 191 nm high. [6]

Researchers recovered a small polymer fragment reproducing the surface pattern. Its pillars were approximately 156 nm wide; the result demonstrated fine-scale replication within a fragment recovered from a difficult mould separation. [6]

Nomenclature and history

Distant introduced Ayuthia spectabile in 1919. The taxonomic database interprets the Latin epithet spectabile as noteworthy or outstanding. [1]

Specimen interpretation

A spread-wing view distinguishes the opaque basal forewing area from the transparent outer membrane. The underside exposes the chestnut body coloration described by Distant. [3]

Artistic interpretation

“The Moon,” “White Edition” and “Beneath the Full Moon” place the pale-winged specimen within lunar compositions. The surrounding finishes accentuate the contrast between opaque white markings and transparent membrane.

Display and care

Keep the enclosure closed and display it in indirect light, away from heat and damp conditions. Handle the frame by its edges and clean only its exterior according to the maker’s instructions.

Key questions

Are the wings entirely white? The forewings combine creamy opaque basal regions with transparent outer membrane; the hindwings are creamy white almost to their tips. [3]

Which wing area has been studied microscopically? The transparent forewing membrane supplied the Ayuthia sample used in the polymer-replication study. [6]

Sources and further reading

Distant’s original description supplies wing and body characters. The Thai checklist and museum records document distribution; the materials studies examine transparent wing surfaces and their replication. [3][4][1][5][6]
