Identity and classification

Campylotes histrionicus belongs to Zygaenidae, subfamily Chalcosiinae. Harlequin moth is an informal name used for this patterned species. [1][4]

Morphology and identification

The Naturalis specimen shows dark forewings with pale yellow marks. Orange hindwing fields are crossed by dark markings. [1]

Range and habitat

The Indian catalogue records northern India, Afghanistan, Nepal and western China. The type locality is in Nepal, and the Nepal inventory includes records from Kathmandu, Solukhumbu and Kaski districts. [4][2]

Food and host plants

The Indian catalogue compiles earlier larval leaf-feeding records from Lyonia ovalifolia and Rhododendron, both in Ericaceae, and also lists Pinus massoniana. [4]

Behaviour

The Nepal biodiversity inventory records daytime flight. [2]

Nomenclature and history

Chalcosia histrionica is a historical combination preserved in Swinhoe’s Oxford catalogue. Current records use Campylotes histrionicus. [6][3]

Specimen views

The museum reference displays the contrast between pale yellow forewing marks and orange hindwing areas within dark wing fields. [1]

Artistic interpretation

“The Lovers,” “The Universe,” “The Star” and “The Mystical Wheel” pair the species with celestial and tarot motifs.

Display and care

Display the closed frame in indirect light, away from heat and persistent damp. Handle its enclosure rather than the specimen, and avoid contact with fragile wings.

Identification and evidence notes

Is this a butterfly? Campylotes histrionicus is a day-flying moth in Chalcosiinae. [1][2]

Which larval plants are reported? The Indian catalogue lists Lyonia ovalifolia, Rhododendron and Pinus massoniana, attributing these records to earlier literature. [4]

Sources and evidence

Naturalis documents adult appearance. The Indian catalogue compiles classification, distribution and host records; the Nepal inventory records local occurrences and daytime activity. Swinhoe’s catalogue preserves the historical name. [1][4][2][6]
