Identity and classification

Prioneris vollenhovii belongs to Pieridae. The Florida Museum catalogue recognizes it at species rank. [1]

Morphology and identification

Wallace’s male has a white upper surface with dark margins and a dusky forewing apex. Beneath, thick black veins divide the hindwing; yellow covers its basal two-thirds and four outer-angle spots. The anal area is black, and a red hairy patch lies near the base. [2]

The Sabah Forestry Department records a forewing length of 35–38 mm and describes darker, purplish veining and a paler hindwing underside than in cornelia. [4]

Distribution and habitat

Wallace described the species from Sarawak material in his own and Saunders’s collections. The Sabah Forestry Department records it as a Bornean endemic. [2][4]

Nomenclature and history

Wallace introduced Prioneris vollenhovii in 1867. Other treatments use Prioneris philonome vollenhovii; the spelling vollenhovi also occurs in regional literature. [2][3][4]

Specimen interpretation

The yellow fields, thick black veins and red basal patch characterize the ventral hindwing in Wallace’s male description. The dorsal surface is predominantly white with dark borders. [2]

Artistic interpretation

Bold contours preserve the sawtooth silhouette, while flat colour separates the dark veins, pale hindwing fields and red basal marking.

Display and care

Keep framed specimens enclosed and away from direct sunlight, moisture and pests. Handle the frame and avoid contact with the fragile wings. [5]
