Identity and classification

Prioneris philonome belongs to Pieridae. The Florida Museum catalogue recognizes philonome, clemanthe and vollenhovii as separate species. [1]

Morphology and identification

Boisduval’s original male has a forewing border resembling that of autothisbe, with four narrow, pale longitudinal marks at the apex. Beneath, these marks are interrupted and become yellow towards their ends. The hindwing base carries a red patch of short, brush-like hairs near the costal vein. [6]

Distribution and habitat

Boisduval described the male from Javan material in the collection of Payen of Brussels. The Smithsonian holds a pinned female identified as Prioneris philonome. [6][3]

Nomenclature and history

Boisduval introduced the name Pieris philonome in 1836. Later classifications use Prioneris philonome; some also include clemanthe and vollenhovii within it as subspecies. [6][5]

Specimen interpretation

The brush-like red basal patch is a feature of the hindwing underside in the original male description. The dorsal forewing shows the narrow pale apical marks against its dark border. [6]

Artistic interpretation

The illustration uses clear wing contours and separate colour fields to emphasize the pale areas, dark venation and contrasting underside markings.

Display and care

Protect framed specimens from sunlight, dampness and pests. Retain the specimen’s original label information alongside any revised identification. [4]
